Today we had a whole free day in Budapest, which meant no provided meals, no pre-booked activities or anything. In other words...a sleep in! As a result I woke up around 8 and went down to have breakfast at 9. Around 9:30 we walked to the House of Terror which is a museum housed in a building which was used as the torture headquarters during both the nazi and the soviet occupations. There were heard a lot of the stories about the people who were imprisoned and executed there. It was a sobering experience and I left feeling quite ill. However we then took the metro over to Buda where we visited the palace and the catacomb labyrinth that lies beneath it. The labyrinth was the weirdest experience on the trip so far. It started out as an underground wax figure museum with opera music playing over top and then turned into a creepy Dracula maze where there were tombs and torture instruments around every corner. During the maze section however, there was really corny, scary music being played over the speakers (like Indiana jones music). It was so weird but so funny because it was definitely not what we were expecting. It also didn't help that we couldn't read any of the signs that possibly explained the whole thing. We then went back to Pest and had lunch under their version of the St Stephens cathedral. After lunch we went inside and saw the incorruptible hand which is the hand of a saint which has not decomposed because of its holiness. We then had heard that the traditional Hungarian baths were worth the trek, but tired from our day we decided to hire a bike rider to take us there in his cart. This was one of the scariest experiences of my life...the guy was a lunatic and speaking Hungarian/english that we didn't understand and drove on the road centimeters from buses and pedestrians. He would call out to other cars and even asked someone in a driving bus for a drink of water. The whole experience was hilarious however and he did get us there in one piece fortunately. The "traditional baths" however turned out to just be a very expensive public pool which we swam in but left early. We then caught a taxi back to the hostel where we got changed and went shopping. I bought a top from H&M and then met a couple of people for dinner and dessert. Then it was back to the hostel for a relatively early night.
