Ephesus was once a great bustling city which was occupied by both Greeks and Romans. Today fallen columns and brick lie throughout the ruins. However despite this, you can still imagine the grandeur of what was one of the largest Mediterranean cities in the 1st century BC. Terraced housing, latrines and the great theatre are still fairly intact, and it is an amazing feeling to walk along the roads of where millions have gone before you.
We stayed in Selçuk which is the nearest town to Ephesus. Upon Ayasuluk Hill in this small town is where John the Apostle wrote his Gospel. His tomb is within the ruins of the Basilica of St John which overlooks Ephesus and Artemis Temple of which only a single column is left. Walking around this skeletal church, you feel so much closer to the events in history that have been so influential.
