Our first glimpse of Eastern Europe was the Serbian capital Belgrade. Our visit was brief and only scraped the surface of this region and what use to be Yugoslavia.
It is strange to think that in our lifetime this country has had such a traumatic history. While on the bus we passed buildings destroyed by the NATO bombings 12 years ago which were not rebuilt.
However what we really noticed was how friendly and helpful the locals were. It was clear that growing up in a country continuously at war, has shaped a people that value the normal life we take for granted.
One of Serbia's most celebrated figures is Nikola Tesla, and as two engineers we felt a duty to visit the Nikola Tesla Museum where his original ideas are demonstrated and his ashes are kept. Edit (Aidan): Actually I somehow performed a "Jedi mind trick" on Alana so that she thought it was her idea and was trying to convince me to go! Tesla is amazing, like an engineering super hero... Check out the photo of the real Jedi tricks next to the 250kV Tesla coil - no wonder people thought he was a magician!
