We timed our last destination in Croatia to be on the eve of this nation's welcome into the EU. Our sobe (guesthouse) host was enthusiastic about the oncoming festivities and as we explored the city streets watching preparations in action for the night's celebrations we were not sure what to expect of the evening.
To our delight as we rocked up to Ban Jelačić square we could hear a marching band thrumming through the crowds. As the night continued we were entertained with a swing band, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, clapper group (traditional a cappella), traditional dancing, lute playing and 2 guys on electric cellos doing rock band covers. It was surreal being present at this historical event and even with the controversial feelings of Croatia joining the EU at a time when the economic market is uncertain, it was still amazing to think that only 20 years ago the thought of this day was unfathomable.
So we entered the EU for the first time on the stroke of the clock rather than by crossing a border...
