Croatia is known for its sobe or guesthouses, rooms let out from private homes. When we arrived at the Dubrovnik bus station we were bombarded by a number of women offering rooms. Overwhelmed by which to pick and not happy with the prices we disentangled ourselves from the crowd. While deciding what to do we were approached by a middle aged man who agreed on a reasonable fare.
When we arrived at the sobe we were greeted by his wife, cheeky 3 year old son and a beautiful view of the harbour from the terrace. This also gave us the advantage of seeing how many cruise ships were docked each day and when to avoid the old town, as literally thousands of additional tourists rome the streets. After 4 months of travelling this place felt very homely, we even cooked one night and got on great with the household cat, but I suspect this was less to do with us and more to do with our yummy smelling meals.
The old city is one of the settings for Game of Thrones, season 2. As we entered through the old gates it certainly felt like walking through Kings Landing and there were even a few buskers dressed as medieval musicians to put you in the mood.
The highlight was walking along the old city walls. The terracotta rooves squashed together like a mushroom patch was really something else. Afterwards we stopped off for coffee at Buza bar which means 'hole', a cafe literally on the rocks, through a hole in the city wall where you can swim around the outside of the city and take in the view.
