Finally found some time to post an update. What a great first week …… so much beer and so little time to blog.
Day 1 - 28th October 2008
Well, I better start at the beginning. I arrived in LA after my 16 hour flight. Crap movies on the plane so the trip seemed to take longer. The first movie they played was in French with no subtitles. I thought how ridiculous. It wasn't until about 15 minutes into the 2nd movie …. which was also in French that I realized that I had my dial switched to the wrong channel. I think I enjoyed the movies better in French anyway. After arriving in LAX, Matt's flight was a little delayed so had to wait around in one of the airport bars. This is where the drinking started, and hasn't yet stopped.
First stop Santa Monica. Didn't really do a lot on the first day as very tired from the flight so just wondered the city, Santa Monica Pier and the beach. That night hit a near by bar with a great bunch of people from the hostel. Also found out that is extremely hard to find anywhere that sells filters for my tobacco. I have run out and bought 4 packs duty free. Went into 4 shops and 3 of them didn't even know what I was asking for.
Today Matt and I went for a walk down to Venice Beach. WOW. What an assorted group of people. A lot of homeless people, art and craft types, fitness freaks and just outright different. We got talking to one guy on the Venice Beach pier who's name is Henry Blake. He ended up pulling out a pile of family photo's and going through them with us. We couldn't work out how many different wives and daughters he had by the end of the conversation, it all got a little confusing. We exchanged some photo's with him and went on our way. A little further along Matt started talking to a man who called himself Rock Star. He was in his 50's and spent his day on the beach building towers from balancing rocks. Matt had to have a go and did pretty well. Tonight was a little quieter and just had a few beers with dinner after the couple walking back from Venice beach.
First solo trip day for me. Matt had already seen Hollywood so he was off on a museum trip that was organized through the hostel. I was off to Hollywood, two bus trips and 1 ½ hours later I finally made it. Debarked at the Chinese Theatre and walked around looking at the hand / foot prints. The first couple were kind of interesting, then after that it all became a little monotonous. Same with the Walk Of Fame. Just a bunch of stars with famous peoples names in them. Also saw the Hollywood sign and Capital Records building which were the highlights of this. So, all in all I wasn't impressed with Hollywood. Tonight the hostel had a pub crawl out to a few of the local places. This was fun. Ended up at a club and just danced for what seemed like ages with a nice guy. To bed by 4ish and up at 7 to catch bus to Vegas.
