Well hello! A quick entry on my time in singapore, as theres very little to say!
Arrived reluctantly from thailand at half past four on thursday, i think, after my freezing singapore airlines flight. Singapore airlines is really good normally, the nice ladies come around with hot towels, im still not entirely sure what for, and the foods pretty good. Unfortunately they had obviously messed up the temperature controls on this flight, as it was absolutely freezing! I got up to go to the loo at one point and saw this really old guy who was actually blue. The young couple sat in the same row as him had given him their blankets too, but he still looked a little lifeless. Loads of people were complaining, as the blowers do feel like theyre blowing directly in your face, but its just the ventilation system so theres nothing they can do. The stewardesses must have been just as cold! luckily i had jeans and jumper on so i didnt suffer too much! I did have this little thai gil in the seat next to me though, who had obviously never been taught how to use a tissue... I thought i was going to strangle her, or her mother who was just ignoring her.
Anyway, after 5 days in singapore i can tell you one thing. DONT COME HERE! Its sooooo boring. really there is stuff to do, its just so touristy. But touristy for singaporians, not just foreigners. Theres the zoo, which i gave a miss, as its quite expensive and really i could go to the zoo anywhere. Theres also this place called sentosa island, which i avoided like the plague. I spoke to a few people who had been and they said it wasnt too bad, theres just loads of people. Its free to lay on the beach (completely manmade, imported sand and everything) but everything else costs loads of money. Theres little india and china town as well, but they dont take very long at all to walk round. Really the main thing to do in Singapore is shop, which would be great if i had any money!!! Theres shopping malls on literally every street corner. Its hard work trying to restrain myself from buying anything. Its also around 15 dollars for a bear, about £5.50. My hostel actually sold the cheapest beer in all of singapore, only 6 dollars a beer so that was ok, but if you want to go out for dinner and have a drink, it almost doubles your bill!
The people are really nice and the city is really clean, but i would be so bored if i lived here. Its quite claustrophobic, like theres really nowhere to go to get out of the city. My hostel , called the Inncrowd, was really nice, its mixed dorms which really dosnt bother me. I found it really surprising the amount of people who come in and ask for a single room, and just have no interest when theyre told its dorm rooms. Its not like everyone walks around naked! The only thing i didnt really like was that the hostel was in little india. The street its on is kind of the backpackers hub now, theres loads of resaturants and hostels. I just really didnt like little india. I felt so uncomfortable as the men just stare. Really really obviously too, at all the western girls. I could only go to the main street for 5 minutes before i felt too uncomfortable and had to go home again. I wanted to shout 'what you looking at?' at them all the time. Alo there are NO women in little india. No exageration, NO women. You'll be walking down a really busy street full of about 50 men, and you'll see maybe 3 indian women. Its really weird and made me feel even more uncomfortable. I spoke to other people who said actual india is even worse. Id like to go, but i would never go on my own.
So i was quite happy for 5 days to stay in the hostel and watch DVD's. It was actually quite a nice break after hectic thailand! I wish id come for about 2 days, that would have been much better and i might have actually done something.
