God this computer sucks!!!
Happy Thanksgiving you all. So was the dinner good¿
Heading out of Cabo San Lucas on the bus was actually a pleasant ride. On the ride headed to La Paz I was thinking. Before entering the bus I had called Sofia and she told me that when I arrived in the city to give her a call and she would pick me up. Now what had me thinking was the fact that I dont know Sofia at all. I met her a couple of times when I was a kid and apparently I got along with her son Willie, which I dont remember having met before in my life. I was just hoping that things wouldnt be too awkward and what not. For those that dont know what <I am talking about. Sofia is an old friend of my tia Sylvia from the good ol Lake LA days.
Once arriving in the city I gave Sofia the call and presto within ten minutes I was getting hugs and kisses like I was a lost son or something. Mexicans will do that though. I dont know how many times I have been at a family event and Im introduced to someone and mom or dad will say something like
Dad: Adrian do you remember your Tio Cornholio and your Tia Esmeralda?
Adrian: No. Hola, mucho gusto...(handshaking-kissing)...(Once out of earshot) So who are they dad? I never met them before.
Dad: Ahhh! You dont remember. When you were five they came over to the house once... Your Tio had the overgrown mole on his neck at the time...you remember stop acting dumb.
Its a little differennt with Mom.
Mom: Adrian do you want to go with me and Gaby to your cousins quincenera?
Me: Quincenera! Whos having a quincenera?
MOm: Your cousin Esther... you remember. Her mom Chewie changed your diaper once. Stop being dumb Adrian... they remember you. And these are the things that you have to go to or when you get married no one is going to show up.
Me: Why would I want people to show up to my things if I dont know them...
MOm: Because they are family!!!
And like family I was treated by Sofia and hers. I met her boyfriend ¨Negro...I call him oso negro though. From the get go Sofia was asking about the family back home, about Grandpa. She made the dad comparison exscept she says Im the much improved version. When we arrived at the house they had a little woman pow-wow going on. They were organizing a quinceneda for Sofias niece Suzanne. I met two other woman that I dont remember ever meeting but they told me they changed my diaper once before, the other said that I look like dad so guess that makes us family right.? I also met my prima Suzi... dang man Sofias family is tall. For being Mexican and everything you know...not too many Mexicans in the NBA. That would be sweet though...
Commissioner Stern: And with the 1st overall pick in the 2007 draft...The Lakers sselect......Gustavio Cuahtemoc El grande Jefe Juarez!!!
Charles Barkely Coommentary: Man, this kid can flat out play. And the best thing is hes from my hometown Todos Santos Baja California. He is only 5-6 but he brings a warrior attitude onto the court... other players definetely need to watch out for the Jefe cause he is an Aztec warrior son...no doubt.
Through out my stay with Sofia whenever I was introduced to other people it was always as Maggies son. When Suzi was doing the introducing I was her cousin from LA. I even met one of Suzis cousins thats my age and when he saw me he started laughing. I asked him why he was laughing and he was surprised. He tells me that he thought I would be mad. Apparentely when we were three or four years old we had a scrap over some legos.
La Paz is a completely different city then Cabo. La Paz is the capitol of Baja Sur. It is well taken care of and cleaner then alot of the Northern Baja cities I have traveled too. The weather is very hot but its not humid and that is a blessing. Most of my time in La Paz I spent hanging out with Sofia and Suzi. Visinting differnent people, going to the beach, walking the malercon(boardwalk) and just hanging out. I had wanted to go snorkeling but in the end I found taht to go snorkeling requires a two day reservation in advance. There is some prime snorkeling and scuba diving to be had in La Paz. It has a unique ecosystem that is home to devil rays, whale sharks, blue, sperm, and gre ywhales as well. The waters off the coast are abundant in plankton. One day I will make it there again and do the scuba diving thing.
One night I walked to the store that was a few blocks down the street. Along the way is a massive recreation park. It is a block full of basketball courts, baseball fields, tennis courts a circus maximus(bike laps) and soccer-football fields. This place is empty during the hot days but at night its alive with people. As I was walking along I saw a group of about 8 kids gyrating and flapping around on a corner of the basketball court. As I got closer I saw that thier movements had purpose for these children were BREAKERS!!!
I began talking to them and asked if I could snap some fotos of thier crew. They were only to happy. They had lots of questions about California and what I was doing in La Paz. When I told them that I use to pop-lock back in the day they got even more interested.
These kids were going to be having a battle royale on the coming Satureday and they wanted me to show up and back them up. They had no poppers and they said I would be a guaranteed victory for thier crew. I was getting excited... I mean I had not worn a pair of Adidas since the howdy dowdy dance my senior year in high school and even that was reluctant. The only reason I battled that night was because our (Me, Rico) crew was under assualt by CYC(Court Yard Crew) and some kids from another school. After that last grandstand for Third Dimension Crew I threw my Adidas away and swore never to touch another pair... with great dancing comes great responsibility.
I began to school them as I was once schooled.
Me: Ok, Jorge. When you come out with the first move hit them with a leg sweep into crouch pose and hold it like you have never held it before...If were going to win this were going to need to be going on all cyclinders fellas.
Erik when they come out with the big guns I want you to do the front handspring and when you land remember to grab your crotch with one hand and with the other point at thier leader. Ha, ha well see what these guys think about a little Los Angeles flava headed thier way. Me thinks they wont like the taste one bit.
Gordo were going to need your shimmy shake as a last defence if all else fails. If it fails then at last we can go down fighting like men.
I didnt end up going to the battle royale. Instead I left for Mazatlan. Im telling my self that I left for good reasons but really I got scared. Some men say the pen is mightier then the sword. Nay my friends its all wrong. I say the rhythmic toe literally dances a fine line between causing a global atomic war and luanching the nexst Pax Romana. some use thier dancing for good, others for evil... I choose neither.
Sofia invited me to Suzannes quince but I left the day before. La Paz was a cool little city but when the road beckons I got to answer the call.
