On Friday we were given the opportunity to go to Rio for one night only, and, as you can imagine, we all jumped at the chance. Well, all accept Mike who strangely decided to stay in Sao Paulo ´to enjoy the traffic`...I think the city has made him ´louco` (lol)!! With Emi`s Son, Fabio, escorting us we caught a last minute flight to Rio de Janeiro on Saturday morning. By 1pm we had landed and were greeted by blazing sunshine. We found our way to the hostel, Z Bra, which was as funky as its name. We shared a room which boasted purple bunkbeds each 3 beds high. Laura was the only crazy one who opted to sleep in the highest bed.
We left our bags at the hostel and set out to see Christ the Redeemer. The three stage journey was long and cramped and often involved one or two of us sitting on the floor or on each others laps but eventually we made it. We reached the summit and the views of both Rio and Christ the Redeemer were truely breath taking! It was increadible!! A thousand photos later we started our descent. We made our way back to the hotel and got changed.
We ate dinner in the neighbouring restaurant where the food was outstanding. Unfortunately for Fabio his cheesecake dessert did not last long around 3 chessecake loving girls.
After dinner we went to see Fabios friend, Marcus. It was his birthday and his friends had organised a birthday party with family and friends at his sister's house. It was a quiet affair but we still enjoyed ourselves with his dads pet rat being the highlight of the show.
An early start on Sunday meant that we could spend as long as possible on the beach before our flight. It was stunning. The beach was clean, the sand white and the sea clear (if but a bit cold). We had 3 hours of uninterrupted sun, sea and sand and we loved every minute of it but it was all too quickly came to an end. We had to come back to reality and catch our flight. After a quick change and some lunch we caught a cab back to the airport. An hour later and we were back in Sao Paulo. The journey home was long...traffic traffic traffic!! This is Sao Paulo after all what else would you expect.
We eventually made it back to our hosts, all be it a bit late, and prepared for transfer to our new host families.
By far one of the best trips to date!! It was well worth the money, the cramped cabs and the begging.
A special thanks to Fabio who bravely escorted us because with out him the trip would not have been possible.
