Discover the history, architecture and culture that define the Latvian capital on this Riga walking tour. Wander past beautiful architecture and soak up the city’s great heritage, culture and traditions. From the Art Nouveau area to Riga Dome Square and the Blackheads’ house, see the city’s major sights and uncover its hidden gems.
Discover the big sights of the Latvian capital, from the architecture to the historical sights, on this unique half-day Riga walking tour. Kick things off from the top of one of Riga’s tallest buildings, taking in bird’s-eye views and getting to grips with the city’s layout. Back on street level, you will walk with your local Riga guide into the Art Nouveau district, admiring the architecture as you stroll to Bastion Hill. Located in one of the city’s parks, this elevated manmade hill offers commanding views across the city.
Head down to the Old Town, stopping to visit the Riga Powder Tower, where your Riga guide will give you a short insight in the history of Riga. Next, explore the wealth of sights dotted around the Old Town, including St Peter’s Church, the Riga Dome Square, Riga Cathedral and Town Hall Square. Take a step back in time on Skarnu Street, calling into Convent’s Yard where the Castle of Sword-Beaers Order stood in the 13th-centurth and John’s Yard with its section of reconstructed medieval wall. There is also plenty of time to see nearby Riga sightseeing icons, such as the National Opera, Livu Square, Cats’ House and ‘The Three Brother’ ensemble.
Before leaving the city centre, we call into the Riga Central Market, housed in five old zeppelin hangars, to witness the bustle of everyday life. Jump on a tram and head to Dad Cafe, a small, cosy café surrounded by wooden houses, small shops and the Laima chocolate factory. Enjoy a drink, order some food and chat with the staff. With full bellies, head back to Old Riga, paying a visit to a factory that produces ‘pastalas’, the Latvian farmers’ work shoes. Here, this Riga tour comes to an end, so pick up a pair of shoes as a unique souvenir or head back into the Old Town to further explore the city.
