Begin your evening walking tour at the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, a South Indian Hindu shrine dating back to 1873. The exterior features an impressive five-tiered tower with fascinating sculptures of gods and goddesses over its main entrance. The temple served as an important place of worship for early Indian immigrants and is now an important cultural heritage site. After visiting the temple, you’ll stop for a cup of frothy teh tarik, a hot Malaysian tea beverage made from black tea and condensed milk.
As you continue on your walking tour, you’ll pass the old Victoria’s Jubilee Fund Building, an English school built by influential British businessman. Next, you’ll visit the Chan See Shu Yuen Association, a resource for the Chinese immigrants who arrived in Malaysia. The building has a green and red facade, and sculptures from Chinese mythology and history, including stone lions that guard the temple from demons. You’ll learn about the Chinese calligraphy on the buildings and its meaning from your guide.
Then take a walk around the Chinatown street markets and haggle for various goods, such as clothing, accessories, DVDs and souvenirs. Get a glimpse of the excitement and busy activity of Asian night markets.
After several hours of walking, give your feet a rest and indulge in food unique to Malaysia at the Old China Café. The restaurant serves Nyonya food, a delicious blend of Chinese and Malaysian cuisine from the ethnic Chinese population living in Malaysia. See below for menu.
