Half-Day Small-Group Beer-Tasting Tour of Cape Town

From: £46.42

Duration: 4 hours 30 minutes

This half-day beer tour of Cape Town takes you through the culture and history surrounding beer-making in the region. Learn about the art of traditional African beer-making and the exciting craft beers that are emerging in the city, and visit the fascinating, technical production line at South Africa’s oldest brewery, which still produces most of Cape Town’s beer. Of course, you’ll also have a chance to taste these beers!

Cape Town has a strong history of organized brewing beer, dating back hundreds of years to the first colonial settlers. This guided beer tour takes you through the many facets of beer-making in the area, from the tradition of African-brewed beers to emerging craft beers to the mainstream beer-making process at the oldest commercial brewery in South Africa.

Your first stop is the Newlands Brewery, situated in a leafy suburb of Cape Town under Table Mountain. Learn about the history of the beer-brewing industry in South Africa, and discover how the company has now become one of the biggest breweries in the world. See the original brewing building before you see the production line and the modern brewing process. Finally, stop to taste some of the different varieties of beer that are brewed at Newlands.

Next stop is a small, popular Cape Town bar, Banana Jam, which features some of Cape Town’s up-and-coming craft beers. Your host will take you through the history of microbreweries in the area, and you will have the opportunity to taste and compare these exciting new beers.

Yoru tour then takes you to a traditional African beer brewer. Here you will discover the origins of African beer, stemming back many thousands of years. Learn that the traditional beer brewers were woman and find out how the beer was brewed. Then, if you’re up for it, kneel in a circle with your fellow beer-tasters and sample this beer in the traditional African way – passing around a shared container of the strong brew.
