Thompsons on Tour

Ullal 5, India

Thursday 29 December 2005

We're not too keen on the buffet breakfast on offer (the western digestive system objects to curry at breakfast time!) and, having seen that an a la carte breakfast menu is normally available outside of the Christmas period, we decide to buck the system and try to order a different breakfast. The key thing is, we don't want to pay for the buffet breakfast as well, so we try and make this clear to the staff. There seems a general reluctance to bypass the current arrangement, but eventually we're able to get cereal, toast, and coffee. Milk for the cereal is hot, the toast is the usual soft, sweet bread with a brown tinge, but the coffee is okay. When we get the bill we find that it's itemised down to the number of packs of butter we had and is about the same cost as the buffet breakfast. They'd definitely rather we had the buffet!

We have another game of snooker. Sarah's had one lesson so she's now vastly improved, whereas Clive's game has stayed at a level of 'very poor'. As a result Sarah wins the snooker. On the other hand Clive wins the table tennis. On neutral ground, the bat and ball game highest score has now reached 42! Cause for celebration, for sure. The reason for the kitchen's reluctance to prepare individual breakfasts becomes clear when people start arriving at the resort for a large company function. Probably about 100 employees of a local IT company are having their annual day out, so the kitchen is very busy. The staff spend the day playing sports or lunching, and in the evening there's a band and traditional dancing entertainment by the beach. It's a private function so we don't get involved, but we can see the dancing as we're having dinner and when we've finished we go outside to get a better look. Just at that moment though the MD gets up to make his speech, so not being particularly interested in how the company performed this year, or how so-and-so did such a fantastic job keeping the water cooler filled, we head off elsewhere.

Elsewhere in this case is the cottage next to ours, where we get chatting with a couple of Indian lads we met earlier who've come over from Bangalore for a break from work. They've brought their DVD player and sound system, which they've hooked into the hotel's TV. They're watching the DVD of Pink Floyd's 1990 'The Wall' concert in Berlin, so we pull up a couple of chairs and grab a warm Kingfisher (the resort's fridges were full) to watch it with them. After all, at the volume they're playing it at we wouldn't have got to sleep anyway!
