Cricket is India's No 1 national sport. Everywhere you go you see kids playing in the street or on any available flat piece of ground. Even amongst Indians who speak hardly any English, cricketing terms such as 'day-night', 'silly mid on' and 'suspect action' are understood. Whilst we've been here the Indian cricket team have been playing Sri Lanka and South Africa in a series of tests and one day games. When a game is on every TV is showing it, and every shop and street stall has a radio tuned to it. It's sometimes hard to get the barman's attention to order another cold Kingfisher. Life can be so hard!
In fact life is difficult for Clive at the moment because last night he came down with a bout of tummy upset and, without going into too much gory detail, he can't go too far from the toilet. We had planned to set of for an overnight trip to Aurangabad tonight, but we've called that off now.
The good news is that today we finish all our planning for the rest of our journey, including train and accommodation bookings. And not before time too - there are lots of travellers heading south from Mumbai to Goa and trains and buses are fully booked. "Bus to Goa Sir?" is a familiar question from touts. We can imagine what some of these buses must be like - you could find yourself sitting on a wooden bench next to someone's goat, with no toilet stop for six hours, and the driver's on his fourth straight shift and can't keep awake....... no thank you! We've opted for the salubrious surroundings of an Indian Railways overnight berth. Just keep an eye out for the resident railway rat - he'll probably know the cricket score.
