Hi all. Despite all the weather forecasts we had an uneventful drive to Heathrow and arrived in time to drink a bottle of Veuve Clicquoit at the purple parking car park. After 30 hours of travelling finally made it to Vientiane, checked into a nice hotel for 2 nights and hit a good bar. It's still hot at 11pm and the city has gone to bed but the late night bar is very pretty with red lanterns hanging from a mass of electrical wires.
DAY 1 -Today we walked 10 minutes up the road to visit Patuxai, Laos equivalent to the Arc de Triomphe also known as the vertical run way by ex pats. We then headed into the very small main centre with most of the tourist hotels and bars. We are transferring into the cheaper part tomorrow. We struggled with the money - 8000 Kip = 1$ US and all the notes look the same. Our favourite bits so far: Strolling through Thia Foun, a Monk compound with a mass of temples, (named Monkland by Lisa). Seeing a capital city with no high-rise buildings which is amazing but will soon be lost.
Our funniest bits so far; Going back to our hotel in a tuk tuk on our 1st night our fare blew out of Lisa's pocket whilst searching for the room key (yet again). Luckily the much amused driver stopped, enabling Lisa to chase back down the 4 lane road to retrieve the fare. (Don't panic - there was no traffic). This evening we ate at a lovely French restaurant and then decided to go the Karoke bar at our posh hotel. Ordered a beer and headed down the corridor to notice lots of VIP rooms. We were ushered out of there very quickly and only then realised we had walked into a brothel. The girls were very friendly and polite, if a bit bemused - as were we!
