Drew Says:
Woke to steady light rain from a leaden sky. Passed a number of road closure signs, which we ignored, on our way to Land's End. Closures, apparently, will not occur until the arrival of the Olympic torch from Greece in two day's time when all hell seems set to break loose in the area with scores of 'Official Cars' and various hangers on predicted to arrive. Thank God we will be long gone.
We stopped at Porthcurno to look at the subsea telegraph cable cabin above the beach. This was the point from which communication cables were laid to outposts of the British Empire. The sea was pretty rough in the bay and a strong wind was blowing from the East.
At Land's End the rain had stopped but the wind had increased. After the obligatory photographs we set off on the bikes shortly before midday and stopped for coffee at the Cookbook Cafe in St Just.
The road from St Just to St Ives is far hillier than I remember and we had a strong headwind to contend with. On the short sections where the wind was behind us we flew along almost effortlessly.
In St Ives David had a quick look in Tate St Ives and we took some photographs outside. The wind down by the harbour was a bit unpleasant, whipping sand off the beach into people's eyes so we decided to move quickly on to our hotel in Hayle.
We were able to park our bikes inside our room at the Premier Inn. We then had a gastronomic treat at the Brewers Fayre curry evening - eat as much as you like for £6.49. Let's hope we dont regret it!
Tomorrow's route should take us to around Padstow ready for the following day on the Camel Trail.
PS David thanks Gill for driving us and our bikes to the start.
