Well the elephant bathing was disappointing, no disgusting, as predicted. Their treatment from the mahouts is blatant animal cruelty and is barbaric. We waited at the river for the eles to arrive from a nearby training camp where they are brought every day to be washed. From other peoples tails of this kind of experience I was quite excited and was really hoping my doubts would be proved wrong as elephants love being washed and playing around in the water. Not this time! We left after two minutes as there was so much beating and shouting to get them to lie down in the water, that i just couldnt watch anymore. They all had chains round their legs, which is just unnecessary. The oldest one just lay down as soon as it reached the water, it's obviously been 'trained' well, but the younger ones were just constantly beaten with one of those sticks with hook in it, I forget what's its called, until they submitted and layed on their sides. It was horrible and I wasn't going to stand by and support this kind of treatment, so we left, but not before telling the mahouts on the way out what I thought of them! If anyone has any ideas on how to go about trying to help them, let me know!
