We were woken last night by the sound of heavy rain hitting our bungalow roof and it was hot and sticky when we got up this morning. We looked around for breakfast in the very wet beach restaurants until we found one. We made our order and waited for what felt like eternity! We were hungover from our day and night drinking session and in need of food, fast! Flies kept landing on us while we waited, I couldnt handle the heat and flies any longer so went and laid in the sea. Chris played with a couple of cute puppies then called me when the food finally arrived. We moved to a cleaner looking table in the restaurant in hope that the flies wouldn't find us, then scoffed our breakfast down before they realised we had moved.
Later on we met up with the lady we booked to massage us, she was great! It felt a lot more soothing than the traditional Laos massage we had earlier in our trip. I was first then Chris, when she finished Chris paid her and waited for the change. She said she didn't have any so Chris took the money back and went to change it up in the restaurant. The lady shouted to him and said she would take it for him. We watched her go to the bar then return. She gave us the correct change but then said in a sad voice that the restaurant manager just took $1 off her for each of us for using the beds on his beach. We knew straight away it was a load of ball, she was probably hoping we would give her an extra $2. Chris explained we were staying at their bungalows so he would go get it back for her but then she quickly ordered him not to and hurried away.
We counted our money and realised we didn't have much left for lunch and dinner, there are no ATMs nearby so we we couldn't get anything out. We tried to have a cheap lunch but we still spent too much so we took a tuk tuk into the main town. The main town was a lot more touristy and built up! We are so glad we didn't stay there.
On our way back we passed a small community of poor people living in small wooden shacks beside the road. Some roofs were covered in plastic bags which I assume was to keep the rain out. They have no running water, no electricity and no warm bed to sleep in at night. We didn't receive any warm smiles from them like we did in Kratie and other rural areas of Cambodia. How can we be picky about the rooms we stay in when these people are living in these conditions? Away from their shacks they look like ordinary people dressed in clean looking clothes. Maybe the lady that massaged us lives in a small shack, maybe that's why she tried to get another $2 from us. We heard from Marco that apparently in the low season its not unusual for muggings to happen around here. It's the high season right now so people have a little more money but just for precaution Marco paid two other guys to drive with him down the dark road that leads from the main town to Otres Beach.
We had dinner in a French restaurant on the beach this evening. We watched the sun set over the horizon while swinging in hammocks, we wished we could stay for one more night but we must pick our visas up tomorrow and begin our journey into Vietnam on the 3rd.
We have an early start tomorrow to catch our bus back to Phnom Penh so will finish the night early watching a few episodes of the Office I think.
