Mui Ne, 19-21 April
We went to Mui Ne to see what a beach retreat in Vietnam would be like, we came out with a bit of a different experience but a great one nonetheless.
Unfortunately our bus dropped us up where the older beach resorts were. This would have been lovely were it not for the rapid rate of beach erosion which meant that the sea was knocking on the back door of most of the resorts rather than gently lapping the shore a few meters beyond it. Not great for swimming but I (Alex) was quite happy to look at it from a coastal engineering point of view (geek!).
With no beach to sit on we thought we would take one of the many touts up on their offer to drive us to the local sand dunes in an old army jeep. We didn't really know what to expect so we were pessimistic about how good the trip would be (attitude you have to take out here). We were pleasantly blown away by the experience! First the driver took us to a little stream where we walked about a 1km paddling our feet in the water to see some really cool rock formations. Then we went inland to the white sand dunes via the local fishing village. The sand dunes were so cool, it was almost like being in a desert but not quite so hot. Sliding down the sand dunes was not the extreme experience we thought it would be, in fact we think we could run down them faster! After the white sand dunes we went back towards town stopping at yet more sand dunes, this time red ones to catch the sunset. This was a great place to chill out and reflect on the day with a beer and chat to other people waiting to see the sunset.
The next day we had time for a swim before boarding our bus to Saigon, Mui Ne gets a high rating from us!
Love Alex and Sophie xxxxx
